ShallowStream reports up to 52.1-fold lower per-frame prefill latency
Shallow-layer indexing and query-time retrieval reduce work in the evaluated streaming-video setup.
ShallowStream uses shallow multimodal-model layers for frame encoding and a continuously maintained KV-cache index. At query time, shallow-layer attention scores and diversity-aware selection choose evidence frames for answering.
The authors report performance on par with their strongest streaming comparators and reductions of up to 52.1 times in per-frame prefill latency and 11.9 times in end-to-end latency for a ten-second-video setting. These are separate metrics and maxima, not a constant acceleration for every stream.
The architecture is worth testing when incoming-frame prefill dominates a workload. Measure evidence coverage, answering accuracy, memory and latency on the actual video/query distribution. A faster benchmark alone does not establish that an arbitrary wearable or edge device fits the model’s memory and power requirements.
